In 1989, Manchester United embarked on an unprecedented spending spree. Neil Webb, Mike Phelan, Gary Pallister and Paul Ince had all arrived when a fifth English purchase - Danny Wallace - agreed to move north from Southampton. The Londoner spurned offers from capital clubs to provide width in Alex Fergusons new-look side and played a key part in the successful FA Cup run in his first season at Old Trafford. Unfortunately, he started to suffer from fitness problems, later diagnosed in 1996 as multiple sclerosis, and was forced to retire after short stints with Birmingham City and Wycombe Wanderers. By setting up the Danny Wallace Foundation and completing the London Marathon in 2006, the 53-year-old has proved to be an inspirational figure with an incredible story
